Food Stamp Challenge Kickoff February 2nd

Tonight as part of our "Live and Learn" series our congregants will gather to learn about the Food Stamp Challenge.

To the participants:

Thank you for taking the step to participate in the Baltimore Hebrew Congregation Food Stamp Challenge!
Monday, February 6, 2012 to Sunday, February 12, 2012

We are very excited to be bringing the Challenge to BHC.

By taking the Food Stamp Challenge, you are joining Jewish and other faith community activists in communities across the county to call attention to the national crisis of huger and poverty. Together, we will send a strong message to our public officials that we need to support SNAP (food stamps) and help keep millions from hunger and poverty.

Challenge Guidelines
  • Each person should spend $31.50 for food and beverages during the challenge week.
  • All food purchased and eaten during the challenge week, including fast food and dining out, must be included in the total spending.
  • During the Challenge, only eat food that you purchase for the project. Do not eat food that you already own (this does not includes spices and condiments).
  • Avoid accepting free food from friends, family, or at work, including receptions and briefings.
  • Invite others to join you.
  • Reflect on your experience and journal so that you can share your thoughts.
Join us for our follow up session Thursday, February 16, 2012 7:00-8:30

Brad and I both felt the sting of having very little when others around us were enjoying their fill. At that meeting and around the conference room table where many BHC staff eat lunch together most days, it was hard just feeling restricted. I am becoming aware of the many trade-offs people who depend on SNAP benefits make all the time. Andy Wayne was going to throw away the olives from his take-out salad until I asked to take them home. At the grocery I had bought a can of tomatoes instead of pricier pasta sauce. Those olives will definitely make my dinner tastier! Feeding only myself and only for a week, these trade offs are no big deal - but having to make these choices all the time?
Stay tuned for blogs by other staff and by a member of BHC who receives SNAP benefits.
